Thursday Island Hospital announces major expansion, bringing essential medical care to remote communities.

New facilities, advanced technology & increased capacity to provide comprehensive healthcare services

Expanded Emergency Department, New Ward & State-of-the-art Operating Theatre to Enhance Patient Outcomes

The Thursday Island Hospital is thrilled to announce a major expansion project that will significantly enhance healthcare services for the residents of the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area. The expansion includes new facilities, advanced technology, and increased capacity to provide comprehensive medical care to the remote communities of the region.

At the heart of the expansion is a new Emergency Department, designed to provide timely and efficient care for patients with urgent and life-threatening conditions. The new department will feature dedicated resuscitation bays, advanced monitoring equipment, and a team of highly skilled emergency physicians and nurses, ensuring that patients receive the immediate attention they need.

In addition to the new Emergency Department, the hospital will also add a new ward with 10 additional beds, bringing the total bed capacity to 25. This expansion will allow the hospital to accommodate more patients and provide a wider range of medical services, reducing the need for referrals to mainland hospitals.

One of the most significant upgrades is the addition of a state-of-the-art operating theatre. The new theatre will be equipped with the latest surgical equipment and technology, enabling surgeons to perform a broader range of procedures on-site. This will not only improve patient outcomes but also reduce the need for patients to travel to distant hospitals for specialized surgeries.

"This expansion is a major milestone for the Thursday Island Hospital and for the entire Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area," said Dr. John Boffa AM, Director of Medical Services at the hospital. "These new facilities and services will allow us to provide a higher level of care to our patients and ensure that they have access to the same quality of healthcare as those living in major urban centers."

The expansion project is part of the Queensland Government's commitment to improving healthcare services in remote and Indigenous communities. The project is expected to be completed in 2024 and will provide significant benefits to the residents of the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area for years to come.
